Top 5 Best Mascaras

Are you the shopper that stares blankly at the endless choices of beauty products and can’t figure out where to start? If so, you’ll enjoy our new “Best of Beauty” series where we’ll do the time-consuming research to bring you a summarized view of the best products in different categories. We’ll bring together information & reviews from the online beauty community, beauty magazine editors, and top retailers to show you the best of the best.

We’re kicking off the series by focusing on the eyes and bring you the Top 5 Best Mascaras. Bigger eyes give the illusion of youthfulness and femininity, so a lot of focus is placed on creating longer and fuller lashes to draw more attention to the eyes. Especially for those of us who are sleep deprived, a simple sweep of the right mascara can instantly add a pop of energy to perk up your oh-so-tired looking eyes.

We also put the top 5 mascaras through two tests: the water and smudge test. Watch the video below to see which one(s) came out on top!

Majolica Majorca Lash Enamel Glamour Volume

With the ever growing popularity of Asian Beauty Products, we’ve selected a community favorite from Japan (Majolica Majorca is a Shiseido brand) and it passed our water & smudge tests with flying colors. The unique aspect of this mascara is the wand featuring two different sized combs. The edge with the larger/wider comb is great for applying the first coat of mascara (for best results apply it using a zig-zag motion to evenly and generously coat the lashes). Then take the smaller/narrower edge to pass through and eliminate any excess clumps. Also, the smaller edge is also great for coating the lower lashes and prevents you from accidentally leaving any marks.

L’Oreal Miss Manga Voluminous Mascara

This drugstore mascara was featured in Allure’s 2014 Best of Beauty and really holds up to its voluminous promise.  The pointed tip and flexible bend in the wand makes it easy to reach the inner lashes, despite the overall size of the brush being on the larger side with the thick bristles. You can very quickly and easily make your eyelashes look fuller and thicker with this mascara.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (Waterproof)

This classic drugstore mascara is a long time favorite and is a great one for lengthening your eyelashes.  The bristles on the brush are equal in length and wrap around in a circular manner. This enables you to easily and evenly coat your lashes with very few clumps.  Many have touted that this mascara exceeds the quality of some department store alternatives, so if you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, this one comes highly recommended.

 CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara

This mascara is also featured in Allure’s 2014 Best of Beauty. The rubber brush is quite unique and the added flex makes it easy to apply. The curve in the brush matches the curvature of the eye, so it make it easier to get the root of the lashes.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara

This mascara is a top seller at Sephora and a lot of beauty gurus also rave about the They’re Real Pushup Eyeliner in the same line. We have the mini travel version, but it still comes with a full sized brush on a shorter wand.  The rubber brush is similar to the CoverGirl Lump Crusher one, but it has slightly longer bristles.  Also, the texture of the mascara is on the thicker side, making it easy to apply (but make sure to give it some time to dry to avoid smudges).
