As a student, I have struggled in the past with trying to find a balance of being comfortable and still wearing clothes that I feel good in. I think that I’ve finally collected a good amount of staple pieces that I’m constantly rotating in order to get through my week of lectures and presentations.
For those of you that are in college, I thought this would be useful to see how I take basic items and translate them into 5 outfits to get me through a week of class in style. Although some people might be more interested in how to pull off wearing yoga pants all week long, picking out my outfit in the morning is pretty much the only reason I will voluntarily get out of bed. Also, the fact that I go to fashion school makes it more fun to be able to experiment and have fun with my looks!
Disclaimer: You’ll quickly notice that I wear a lot of black & white, but that’s because I find that this color palette has a longer longevity in my wardrobe.

I have never been a morning person, so finding pieces that I can chuck on and make it look like I put effort in my outfit (when really I just rolled out of bed and had 5 minutes to get ready) is essential. When I have no idea what to wear, I always go with all black, and add touches to my outfit that make it a bit more interesting like distressed denim or bright shoes. I live in this leather jacket because I can throw it on anything and it instantly edges up any look.
Owning a couple of white t-shirts is crucial to my wardrobe. I am constantly on the search for the perfect t-shirt, and I think this one from Zara is great. For the days that I’m just running to class, I usually will throw on a look like this. It’s minimal & comfortable — my style motto!
This day I had a presentation, and wanted to look somewhat put together without going all out. Usually I would go for an all black look, but I tried to make it a bit more interesting by adding a silk polka dot blouse underneath a cropped sweater and wearing these metallic platform oxfords that are a little out of my comfort zone but I love them to spice up a look.
They’ve always got the AC turned up in my classrooms regardless of the season, so I’ve learned that it’s better to be too warm than too cold! I recently bought this super oversized mohair sweater from H&M and I know I’m going to wear it all winter long. It’s super comfortable and it pairs great with black pants and boots or lightwash jeans and sneakers. I’ve been lusting after the Acne Loma boots for ages, and these ones from Zara are a very similar style for a reasonable price.
For Fridays I still want to be casual but still feel good going out to happy hour after class. These jeans from ASOS are super comfortable and think they look really great with heeled boots.
It’s safe to say that my staple pieces include black pants, t-shirts, and a great leather jacket. Hopefully this has provided some inspiration for your school wardrobe! Let me know in the comments below what your school staples are!
