Attending a wedding can be quite similar to going to prom where figuring out what to wear either evokes feelings of excitement or stress. For those of you who see these occasions as an opportunity to splurge on a new dress or outfit, we’ve got some great wedding guest outfit picks for you! The rest of you who are looking to go with something from your closet, we have some tips below that will help you pick out & style the pieces that you may already own.

Since it’s the bride’s big day to stand out, you want to steer clear of an all-white dress or outfit. It’s best to also check the invitation to see if there’s a suggested dress code. Typically if the wedding is on the more formal end, the invitation will note that is black tie formal or black tie optional. If there are no guidelines, I think the easiest way to figure out what to wear is to look up photos of the venue and dress appropriately for the venue.

Based on the weddings I’ve attended thus far, I would categorize weddings into 3 different types: casual, semi-formal, and formal. I’ve put together an outfit for each type and also included an representative image of the type of venue each look would be perfect for.

Casual Wedding

Venues: Beach, Park
Style Tip: Summer dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits all match with the more relaxed environment and allows you to still look “dressed up” without having to feel uncomfortable. Wedge sandals or flat sandals are perfect for looking stylish while staying comfortable.

Semi-Formal Wedding

Venues: Winery, Garden, Golf Club, Hotel Ballroom
Style Tip: Bright colored or floral printed cocktail dresses are fun and lively, especially for the summer. Pastels are also a nice match for the romantic atmosphere. Just make sure your dress is not too short or too revealing.

Formal Wedding

Venues: Golf Club, Hotel Ballroom
Style Tip: Go for longer dresses or a gown. Gem colors are great, especially when accessorized with some glitz to add glamour. Go for sparkly earrings, necklaces or bracelets.
